The ETC is Dead, Long Live the PLEX Activation Code!

Intrepid space pilots, we have important news for you.

As you most likely know, for many years now we have been distributing EVE Time Codes (or ETCs for short) through our numerous partners around the world. However, over time the concept of a "time code" became less commonplace and increasingly overshadowed by PLEX, introduced back in 2008.

To make things less confusing for our players and simplify the EVE Online product line, we began distributing new codes to our partners starting 1 May 2014 called PLEX Activation Codes (or PACs for short). Each PAC enables its buyer to purchase a number of PLEX — 1, 2, 6, 12, or 28 PLEX — via the Account Management system. The Suggested Retail Price (SRP) on PLEX Activation Codes is going to be the same as the SRP for PLEX offered directly by CCP — so a 2-PLEX Code will cost you the same as a an old 60-day ETC  would have.

That said, there are some important usability changes related to the new PLEX Activation Codes that deserve a separate mention, so read on for more information.

What is a "PLEX Activation Code"?

A "PLEX Activation Code" is a prepaid product sold via our partners. These may include items, game time for new accounts (as Starter Packs) or PLEX.

A PLEX can be used for different purposes, including upgrading a trial account, adding game time or getting in-game currency by trading it on the in-game market.

Full list of our third-party retailers can be found on this page

These partners will email you a PLEX Code immediately after purchase, so it is important that you input correct information when purchasing PLEX Activation Codes.

What is a PLEX?

A Pilot License Extension (PLEX) is an item that adds 30 days of game time to your EVE Online account. It can be converted from any game time code and, like any other item, it can be traded on the EVE market. More information on PLEX and various ways to use it can be found in the EVE Online Knowledge Base.

How do these PLEX Activation Codes work?

PLEX Activation Codes work virtually the same way as the old ETCs did; the only difference is that the new PLEX Activation Codes must be used on the EVE Online Account Management website (https://secure.eveonline.com). If you try to use a new PLEX Activation Code in the EVE Online client, you will get an error message directing you to the Account Management website.

Please note that purchasing a PLEX does not automatically extend the subscription on your account. In order to do that, you first need to redeem a PLEX, then activate it from within the game client.

Can the PLEX Activation Codes be used to extend my subscription?

Yes, you can use the code to extend your EVE Online subscription by 30 days.

Can I use these PLEX Activation Codes on a trial account?

Yes, these codes can be used on trial accounts, and you can upgrade your trial status with PLEX.

Can I use these PLEX Activation Codes if my account is inactive?

Yes, you can reactivate your subscription with PLEX using the Account Management website. If you have some PLEX in game on an inactive account, you can also use the Hours for PLEX option to use PLEX from the game.

What happens to the old ETCs? Are there any plans to deactivate those?

There are no immediate plans to deactivate any ETCs distributed by CCP to its partners.  ETCs will simply not be available anymore – PLEX Codes will be the new item sold by CCP’s partners.

What happens to the Secure Time Code exchange?

The old ETCs can be traded with other players via the Secure Time Code exchange as before. The new PLEX Codes cannot be traded directly, but you can buy and sell your PLEX on the market after redeeming the PLEX Code in the Account Management system.

I saw some really cheap PLEX on the Internet -- is this legit?

A list of official CCP partners can be found here. We urge all players to exercise common sense and caution with other sources. Many offers on the Internet are posted by Real Money Traders (RMT-ers), and dealing with them is not only against the EVE Online EULA but can also compromise your account and put your personal information at risk.

For example, if someone offers to sell you PLEX for real money and deliver it in game, that it is a EULA violation (and we encourage you to report such instances to us at security@ccpgames.com). PLEX sold by CCP and its partners are delivered to the account’s redeeming system.

EVE on Steam: Past, Present and Future

Greetings,

My name is CCP Spitfire; some of you might remember me from the forum days of old. I used to be a Russian community coordinator for EVE Online, and now I am a part of the CCP sales team. We work on setting up partnerships with game retailers and distributors to bring EVE Online to the masses, and also manage CCP’s ETC reseller and affiliate programs.

Today I would like to tell you about our new initiative that has been in the works for some time. We have just completed integration with the Steam gaming platform, and now people who buy EVE Online via this channel will have a slightly different user experience compared to the past.

First of all, tomorrow you might notice a new Steam icon on the EVE web login page. This means that you no longer need to manually create an EVE Online account after buying the game activation key on Steam; instead you use your Steam credentials to log into the game and the websites. This has been made possible by the Single Sign-On (SSO) technology developed by Team GForce.

Furthermore, players who have bought EVE Online on Steam from May 31 will be able to pay for their subscription on a recurring basis and buy PLEX packages directly via Steam, thanks to the back-end work done by Team Mammon.

Why are you doing this?

We first started offering EVE Online on Steam in March 2008. Since then tens of thousands of players entered the EVE universe though this medium, and we want to take this cooperation even further: after all, Steam is the world’s largest gaming platform. We also took an opportunity to clean up the product description for EVE Online, update the artwork, fix the client deployment process and introduce the new Starter Pack for new players instead of a generic game activation key.

I already bought EVE on Steam, why can’t I use the new features?

Initially the new features will be rolled out to new users only. Once we evaluate the feedback and data from the first stage of the program, we will look at taking the next steps and adding new features to the integration. EVE Online subscription and PLEX packages on Steam are priced in the exact same way as on our own website, so all players are on equal footing regardless of the way they pay for their subscriptions.

What’s next?

We will evaluate the performance of the new options over the coming months and see what makes sense to do next: as mentioned above, one opportunity would be to open new subscription options and PLEX purchases to existing EVE Online users on Steam. We would love to hear your opinions on this; please leave your questions and feedback in the comments thread.

Other aspects of Steam we are potentially very interested in are the Community Hub and Steam Workshop – our community team has already started looking into the possibilities here, and we would love to hear your feedback on this as well.

Cheers!

EON for PLEX

We interrupt our scheduled broadcast of Retribution-related news and information with a guest dev blog from our friends at the EON magazine. Please welcome EON Oliver, who brings you some exciting news!

Splendid news! EON magazine can be acquired for space bucks, which is to say you can have the very latest print edition of EVE Online's New Eden's official magazine delivered to your place of work, residence or play, in return for just one of those PLEX things. And wouldn't you just know it, the very latest issue was published just a couple of weeks ago.

I'm sure you're all aware of what EON is, but seeing as I don't get to write dev blogs these days (quite rightly, not being a dev), perhaps you'll allow me a brief pitch:

Produced and published by us at MMM Publishing, EON has been around since 2005 and it is of course a magazine that is all about EVE Online (with a light sprinking of DUST 514 for good measure). Each issue combines dev interviews, gameplay previews, official fiction, guides, war reports, ship fittings and profiles of characters, corps and alliances, all of it written by EVE players with a great deal of support from CCP.

Admittedly, being a quarterly magazine, we are quickly overtaken when we do get our noses ahead of events, but in this increasingly-homogenized digital age, we do have one or two qualities worth shouting about. You can sample most of them by registering at eonmagazine.co.uk and downloading a free issue. If you can somehow imagine those silky smooth pages sliding beneath your fingers as you relax in your favorite chair by a roaring fire, you can appreciate the importance of the offer.

Redeeming a copy of EON for PLEX is easy and can be completed via the Account Management page. All you need to do once you've transferred the PLEX is enter your shipping information. Your magazine will then be sent within the next week from our London office and should be in your hands within a few days or so, depending on where you are in the world.

For the moment "EON for PLEX" is just a straight swap of 1x PLEX for 1x current issue. We of course hope that those of you who take up the offer enjoy the magazine and will one day subscribe and enjoy the savings and free gifts that comes with it. Meanwhile, if you have any concerns or questions about EON, feel free to email us at eon@mmmpublishing.com
